22 Philly Schools Closing For Good After Today's Classes

Posted: Updated:

Friday is the very last last day of classes for some students in the Philadelphia School District.

Their schools are closing for good this year because of the district's budget problems.

Among the nearly two dozen schools closing permanently will be Germantown High School, which will be shuttered after 99 years.

A $304-million budget shortfall has forced the district to close schools, cut after school programs and lay off thousands of employees.

The city has promised $74 million, and the state is said to be putting together a funding package.

But nothing is certain -- and that's a big worry for parents.

"They're really concerned about what kind of schools their kids will be entering next year. And that's a valid concern, and nothing is set in stone," said Shanee Garner, of Public Citizens for Children & Youth.

Budget negotiations are expected to last all summer, with no resolution expected until just before the start of the school year.
