Instagram adds video, Facebook adds picture option

Posted: Updated:

Social media sites are becoming rivals, constantly trying to one-up the other, and Facebook just served a one-two punch to their biggest competition.

Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, announced Thursday that the app will now allow users to make 15-second videos. Plus, users will be able to apply filters to their videos in order to change the colors and contrast.

The change parallels the app Vine, released by Twitter in January, which allows users to make six-second videos.

Similar to Vine, Instagram videos allow users to record segments within a single video.

Although that's pretty much where the comparison stops; Vine has no filter options.

Plus, Instagram videos will have a "cinema" feature that corrects shaky video and makes it look more professional. The option is currently only available for iPhone 4S and iPhone 5.

So you already have Instagram (or you just downloaded it), how do you start recording?

Press the camera icon in the center like you normally would, but then you'll notice a video camera icon to the right of the center button on the next screen. Simply hold down the red video camera button and start recording. Hold down the button as long as you'd like to record, but let go and re-start to create another segment.

Response has already been overwhelming and many agree that Vine needs to seriously step up their game to compete with Instagram's huge improvement to their already extremely successful app.

In addition, Facebook announced they'll allow their users to directly comment with pictures soon.

Instead of forcing you to link the picture, you'll soon see a little camera show up in your comment box.
