Cell Phone Tower Taken Down After Fire Caused It To Lean

Posted: Updated:
BENSALEM, Pa. -

A cell phone tower in Bensalem is finally down after a fire caused it to begin to fall.

The tower is located in the parking lot of the Bensalem Public Works Township building at Hulmeville and Byberry roads. Officials say around 11:30 a.m. Friday morning sub-contractors were welding, and that sparked fire in the insulation.

The fire erupted just 10 feet above the workers.

Shawn Divine saw it shoot 70 feet up in the air.

"I seen the flames from my neighborhood," said Divine.

The tower began to lean, causing concern for nearby offices and a senior community close by. They were evacuated as a precaution.

"They just said that everybody had to get out of the buildings," said Alice Mauro.

Fire crews were stalled dousing the flames until Peco could shut off electricity. After that began the task of stabilizing the tower to eventually bring down the entire structure which happened just before 10 that night.

"This is crazy and scary," said Kelly Alger. She came by to watch. Her father works for Bensalem Public Works.

"He said they're going to drop that one piece down right into the parking lot," she said.

People stopped by all day hoping to see the structure get taken down.

"I just thought maybe we could get closer but they had it taped off," said one woman there with her children.

Next, AT&T will bring in a portable communications device to get any interrupted cell service back up and running.
