On Friday, June 21, 2013 at 11:00 p.m. officers responded to the Walmart at 12100 Lem Turner Road in reference to a missing 8 year old child.
The initial investigation revealed that the victim was taken away from the store by an unknown white male in a white van and that the suspect vehicle was last seen driving south on Lem Turner Road from the scene. A search of the area was conducted including local motels, sexual offenders, and sexual predators.
Based on the description of the suspect, as provided by the victim's mother, one offender stood out as a strong possibility. The victim's mother was shown a photograph of Donald James Smith and she identified him as the person that had abducted the victim. Further investigation revealed that Mr. Smith had not been home since 7:00 a.m. hours on Friday morning and was driving a white Dodge van similar to that described by the victim's mother.
Investigators located Donald Smith traveling southbound on I95 near I10 and was able to take him into custody. He was traveling in a 1998 white custom Dodge van with a Florida license plate of BCBK32. An AMBER alert had been issued for that vehicle.
Shortly after 9:30 a.m., investigator discovered the body of victim Charish Perriwinkle at an undisclosed location on Broward Rd. near a church. The investigation has transitioned from an abduction to a murder investigation.
