Day One With Google Glass

Posted: Updated:
Los Angeles, CA -

I was so excited to pick up my #GoogleGlass. It seemed like it had been forever since I got the message saying I was picked as one of the #ProjectGlass #explorers.

First of all, it was awesome taking a mini tour of Google Headquarters in Los Angeles as we walked our way from the entrance to their #ProjectGlass showroom. Their offices look like a place anyone would want to work at. It's kind of like a fairy tale. EVERYONE (well practically everyone) had on #Glass. It was a little freaky at first. I felt like I stepped into an alternate universe or the Starship Enterprise.

There were lounges, sofas and swings in the common areas. There was a beautiful garden lounge where (free) gourmet food was being served. Dogs were allowed to come to work with you AND they even had a Massage Room! Yes, our glass guide told us for a nominal fee, you could schedule a massage on your break. Wow right?! Ok, enough about Google employee fun and back to my Glass pick-up experience.

As I tried on the different colors of glass, I was greeted by someone who offered me a glass of wine, champagne, mimosa or soft drink! A tray of yummy goodies came quickly afterwards. I suppose for $1500 one would say that they should have that! They didn't have to, but I certainly appreciated it. After choosing my tangerine colored #Glass, they brought me over to a table for the  quick tutorial on #Glass' features.

Luckily my friend and @myfoxla's Tech Ninja, Tshaka Armstrong, came with me and he brought his laptop and camera. We quickly got a Google+ hangout started which he invited me to.

We got to utilize one of #Glass' features immediately!

The whole thing, from start to finish, took about an hour. Melina, our Glass Guide was very patient with me as I think I had her spend a bit more time on the "fitting part" of the glass tutorial than she wanted to. I wanted to make sure it was sitting high enough on the bridge of my nose so I could see the screen fully.

I think my hair got in the way of the touch pad a bit and also fell in front of the camera a number of times. One of the people in our hangout that day told me later that he actually thought to himself, "ah, that's what it feels like to have hair again." LOL!

I'll have to admit that after about an hour of wearing Glass I started getting a funny feeling in my forehead. It was not quite a headache, but it definitely was time to take it off before it turned into one. I don't normally wear glasses and while I do wear sunglasses outside, these were a bit heavier than your typical pair. Melina cautioned me to not wear it for too long. She said no more than a couple of hours, especially in the beginning. Apparently all the glass guides tell the #Explorers that to avoid getting headaches. She tells me she wears hers most of the day and is totally used to it.

See our first hangout below with/#Glass from Google HQ in Venice Beach. More #GoogleGlass impressions to come!
