How to keep your family safe this Fourth of July

Help your family stay safe this Fourth of July with the following tips from Renee Zarr, Kohl's Injury Prevention Education Coordinator.

Facts:

  • around the Fourth of July, thousands of children and adults are injured by fireworks
  • the risk of firework injuries is greatest to children ages 5-19 and adults 25-44
  • nearly 90% of emergency room firework related injuries are from ones that are legal


Safety Tips:

  • always follow city and state laws
  • children should NEVER light fireworks
  • all bystanders should stay a safe distance away
  • never re-light fireworks
  • Sparklers are not "safe" - they burn around 1,200 degrees
  • always keep a hose, bucket of water and fire extinguisher close by
  • thoroughly soak in water all used and "dud" fireworks before throwing them away
  • make sure all unused fireworks and lighters are stored in a dry, cool area out of children's reach
  • safest way to see fireworks is at a public display
