Work Resource Centers, Phony Placements For Real Dollars

Posted: Updated:
Los Angeles, CA -

(FOX 11) The federal government spends millions of dollars a year to fund Work Source Centers in the LA area.  These are centers that promise to help people find jobs. But now, some of these job centers are facing allegations of fraud by former employees. Ex-employees who told FOX 11 News, they are fed up and have decided to blow the whistle on what really goes at these centers.

"We receive pay to come do the dirty work. The people who are paying us are getting done dirty. It's the government", said one former employee.  The "dirty work" she is referring to allegedly involves falsifying documents to collect federal funding. Work Source centers get millions of dollars to help the unemployed find jobs. But the people we spoke with say the centers are collecting federal dollars for phony placements.

When we first started looking into this story, we only had two people making such allegations. Since then, we've had a larger number of former and current employees telling us similar stories. They say the centers offered incentives like cash and gas cards to get people who found jobs on their own, to come in and fill out paperwork.  So, it would appear as though Work Source got those people their jobs.  The Executive Director of one center, Career Partners, says the allegations are not true. However, FOX 11 News obtained an audio tape where bosses were telling employees to recruit people who are already employed.

We tried to get a response from county officials who oversee a "Career Partners" in Rosemead, but they declined.

This week we want to make a federal case for Joseph (1998) finding a forever family, so we obtained the necessary clearances to accompany Joseph to the Los Angeles Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). And during our friendly investigation, we found Joseph to be a dynamic teen with a good bit of focus and determination for someone his age.

The number alone is shocking. In one South Los Angeles zip code, there are 240 registered sex offenders living there. You can get this information off of Megan’s law website, required by state law, named after seven-year-old Megan Kanka, a New Jersey girl who was raped and killed by a known registered sex offender who had moved across the street from the family without their knowledge. The idea is to prevent that from happening again, and of course it’s a noble goal.
