Crews make 2 water rescues in flooded Barrington area

BARRINGTON, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

All major routes across the Barrington area are now open, but Village Manager Jeff Lawler reported that residential streets remain flooded and impassable Wednesday.

According to a public safety scanner, Barrington area emergency personnel called for backup for a water rescue at North Kelsey and Old Barrington roads reported just before noon in Lake Barrington.

Another water rescue was reported on Russell Street near Summit in Barrington. A home was surrounded by water, trapping those inside, Lawler said.

Emergency crews drove an elevated vehicle to the front door to help the residents get out.

The village recorded 5 inches of rain between 3:30 and 7 a.m., Lawler said.

At the storm's peak, rain came down at a pace of 8 inches per hour, but Lawler said that rate of rainfall didn't last.

"A typical rain storm will result in approximately an inch of rain over this same time period, and in most cases would not cause any flooding in village streets or sewers," a Barrington press release stated. "The last wide‐spread flooding event to hit Barrington was in 2010, when the village received 2.6 inches of rain in a 12‐hour period."

The major intersection of Routes 14 and 59 was closed early in the morning, but was back open by 9:30 a.m.

"We had flooding in a number of neighborhoods," said Lawler, adding that already saturated soil from previous rains exacerbated the situation. "We had flooding around the low points in the community because that's where the water accumulated."

The village's Public Works, Police and Fire Departments were deployed to barricade flooded roadways, remove vehicles from flooded parking lots, and provide sandbags where requested. The sandbags are at the Public Works facility, 300 N. Raymond Ave.

"Please be aware that flooding can occur rapidly and without warning," the press release stated.
