The I-405 Sepulveda Pass Improvements Project cost taxpayers $1 billion and will feature a 10-mile car pool lane but the problem is, despite all the money that has already been poured in, the county Metropolitan Transportation Authority could be asking drivers to pay to use the car pool lanes.
The construction project is reportedly $100 million over budget and to cover the cost overrun the Metro board asked staff to look into implementing a congestion pricing program for the 405 HOV lanes.
Such a program would create a toll road system for the car pool lanes that are more expensive during peak hours.
Metro chairman Michael Antonovich proposed the study be done but his office tells Fox 11 that the L.A. county supervisor is actually against congestion pricing.
His office said he only proposed the study because if the HOV lanes aren't tolled the tab would most likely be picked up by the entire county, meaning west side residents and valley drivers would benefit with the rest of the county being disproportionately impacted.
Drivers we spoke with said the late timing of such a measure is unfair.
"I think at this point in the game it's not fair to spring that on us who are commuting to work every day," said Emily Heidt, a Pacific Palisades resident.
