ATLANTA -

Police met with Buckhead business owners on Friday after a recent string of jewelry store robberies.

In some robberies, thieves have used hammers to smash their way into jewelry cases.  In others, the robbers are using more traditional methods.

Authorities believe the men behind a recent smash-and-grab at Lenox Square are also responsible for another robbery in Illinois. According to sources familiar with the investigation, authorities have matched clothes worn by the robbers in both incidents.

In another robbery, a $22,000 Omega watch was stolen from a store in Phipps Plaza.  The robber tried the pricey watch on. He then told the employee that he owned it and ran out of the store.

Stores were reluctant to discuss specific security details with FOX 5.

Greg Norred runs the security firm Norred and Associates.

"You've got to realize what criminals are after. They are always after the easy target with the most stuff. Well, jewelry stores are going to have the most stuff but, they can't be the easy target so they have to deter this type of thing," said Norred.

Norred said that criminals copy each other.  He said stores should have jewelry cases that can withstand hammer blows as well as security guards visible at the door.

Nerves are frayed among shop owners after a popular Villa Rica jewelry store owner was shot and killed during a robbery earlier this week.

The Atlanta Police Department's Buckhead commander met with merchants and victims on Thursday to reassure them that authorities will do more to protect them, including making increased stops at the stores.

Several merchants told FOX 5's Morse Diggs that they were happy with what they heard from the commander.
