Hawks, Pride, Buffett, Old St. Pats equal busy time for police - FOX 35 News Orlando

Hawks, Pride, Buffett, Old St. Pats add up to busy weekend for Chicago police

Posted: Updated:

It's one down, three to go for Chicago Police who are putting in long hours this weekend to keep the peace and manage the craziness of three big events: the Blackhawks parade, the Old St. Pats Block Party, and the Chicago Pride Parade. Add the Jimmy Buffett concert at Northerly Island on Saturday night and you've got a lot going on.

Police are certainly glad the Blackhawks rally is over. And except for one man arrested for toting a pair of guns and a few knuckleheads who tried to sneak in other things they shouldn't, the day went off without a hitch.

"I think it was a great success," said David Kennedy, the city's Deputy Director of Special Events. "We were very fortunate that there were no injuries, major injuries, everybody behaved themselves."

For some, the Hawks party was just the beginning of the fun.  And for police -- the work was just getting started. On Friday night, the 29th annual Old St. Pats World's Largest Block Party kicked off. Organizers hoping the morning rally won't leave people too tired to come out tonight.

"Gee, we're certainly hoping it doesn't hurt, we're hoping it helps us," said Father Tom Hurley of Old St. Patrick's Church. "There's been so much energy in downtown today that we're hoping that people will want to keep the party going and come on over and join us for the block party."

But for police and the city, there is more order to be kept this weekend....

"We've done a lot of events back to back, several times over several weekends, several times a month," Kennedy said. "We'll have a lot of people working hard this weekend but again working with police and fire, everybody's well prepared."
