Project aims to restore Camp Toccoa

Posted: Updated:

The hit HBO miniseries Band of Brothers told the incredible story of the Easy Company, a World War II parachute infantry regiment that trained at Camp Toccoa, right here in Georgia.  Since the war, the land where the camp existed has been used for various things, but today, citizens want to honor its important military history.

Visitors still flock to Camp Toccoa, which sits in the shadow of Currahee Mountain in Stephens County—but there's not much to see today.  Thanks to some very determined citizens-- and a little help from Hollywood-- that probably won't be the case for long.

On a quite, overcast summer day, it's hard to believe that the empty land is a destination for anyone.  But it's what happened there seven decades ago when soldiers trained there as paratroopers that makes Camp Toccoa so special.

"They became so close that I've heard several of them say they could spot a brother 200 yards away-- in the dark," said Brenda Carlan of the Currahee Military Museum.

But after the war, crews dismantled buildings and cleared the camp, and it seemed like the end of the road.  Inside the last remaining standing building at Camp Toccoa, you'll find some interesting pieces of the history, including a wall of barracks.  There are still some existing bed frames where the soldiers slept.

It's not much, but those barracks are part of the building blocks for the future.  The Camp Toccoa at Currahee project is a new charge led by volunteers.  Their master plan is to create a leadership retreat for groups.

In June, the project got a $25,000 boost from the man who brought Band of Brothers to the screen: Tom Hanks.  There's still money to be raised and work to be done, but project leaders say it's a mission they must complete.

As of now, the project has acquired roughly 6 acres of the land that made up Camp Toccoa.  Phase one of their work includes fixing up the last remaining building with offices, a gift shop and restrooms.

The notion of 'Keeping up with the Jones' is not new, but there is a new pressure coming at you. Peer pressure - whether you're 13 or 33 - is a powerful thing. Now throw in social media and you have what an Atlanta counselor calls 'Keeping up with the Jones' on steroids. And if you're not careful that can get costly.
