ATLANTA -

Tina Tait has come a long way from the woman who struggled through last year's Peachtree Road Race. She's lost almost 80 pounds, but it's just not the weight that's changed.

Tina is somebody who never wanted her weight to hold her back. She ran, she strength trained, she did yoga and she worked with a personal trainer, but the more Tina tried to find her inner 'thin' person, the more she felt like she was losing ground.

"I always called myself a fathlete.  So, a fat-athlete.  Because I am really athletic.  I'm a three-day breast cancer walker," said Tait.

But instead of losing weight trekking 20 miles a day, Tina gained 8 pounds.

"And I just thought, ‘How can somebody walk 60 miles and come home from that 8 pounds heavier,'" said Tina.

She had the same thing happen last July while training for the Peachtree Road Race. Again, instead of losing weight, she gained 6 pounds.

She vented her frustration in her blog "Fat Girl Dives In."

"One day, I was just driving down the interstate, and it just hit me like a ton of bricks.  I had to pull over, and I just started crying, and I said, 'It's the time. I'm going to have the surgery,'" said Tina.

She had weight loss surgery at Piedmont Hospital. Tina had three months to get ready.

"I just exercised and I ate right and I was going to be the most prepared person that has ever been prepared for this surgery, that was my goal," said Tait.

In late January, Tina had the surgery to dramatically - and permanently - reduce how much food her body can digest.

"And probably three to four days after that, I was out walking on the street and it was like starting over again physically," said Tait.

And finally, a breakthrough,

"She is so positive and working so hard with her exercise," said Karen Schrier, Tait's trainer.

After three years of pushing herself with Schrier, Tina started seeing results.

"Sometimes I even feel sad for the person that I was before, the person that didn't get to do all the things that I'm doing now," Tait said.

She plans on running the Peachtree Road Race again – this time 75 pounds lighter.

"I know I can do it, and I'm totally ready," Tait said. "I feel like it's not even me sometimes, it's like who is this person? She's running and she keeps running."

As of this weekend, Tina is down four more pounds. She's hoping to lose another 50 pounds more. Her advice to anyone who wants to get in shape is find what you love and then go do it.
