PHILADELPHIA -

Former Phillies catcher Darren Daulton is awake, speaking and recovering after undergoing surgery Monday to remove two brain tumors.

It was last week when word became public that the 51-year-old former All-Star, known widely as "Dutch," had been diagnosed with the tumors.

The 97.5-FM radio host had not been feeling well for two weeks, management at "The Fanatic" released in a statement, and co-workers said he had experienced difficulty speaking. That prompted management to send him initially to Bryn Mawr Hospital.

Dr. Kevin D. Judy, who performed Monday's surgery, is section chief for surgical neuro-oncology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

He said both brain tumors were on the left side of Daulton's head.

"The surgery went well. Darren is awake in the ICU and talking with his family right now," Judy told media during a Monday afternoon news conference.

The surgery took about seven hours because surgeons performed what's called an "awake craniotomy," which means they took him to the operating room and sedated him but did not use general anesthesia.

After sedating Daulton and preparing him, doctors woke their patient to map directly map his language function on his brain in order to avoid damaging it.

Judy aid that, as best he can tell, the tumors were removed.

"The second tumor was in a less-eloquent part of the brain, and we took that out after we did all of the language mapping," Judy said.

The family allowed doctors to reveal that Daulton had a "glioma," which is a tumor that arises from the brain tissue, not from cancer anywhere else in his body.

The next steps in his recovery will be determined once doctors have the final pathology, but typically a patient with these issues and over the age of 40 just about all are treated with some form of radiation.

Judy said he expects it to take Daulton three to four weeks to get over the surgery.

"As far as full recovery, he did have some trouble prior to surgery with the language function, and we'll have to see how that evolves," Judy said.

A spokesman for Daulton's family said he has appreciated the outpouring of thoughts and prayers from the community.

The radio station has also set up an email address to which listeners can send messages to Daulton. That address is dutch@975thefanatic.com.
