Same Sex Couple The First To Marry In Delaware

WILMINGTON, Del. -

Dan Cole shared a tearful and heartfelt moment with the love of his life Joseph Daigle.

"The best day of my life was in October when we moved into our house and had our housewarming. The best day after that was when we got engaged and now this is the best day of our life," said Dan after the couple married Monday evening. They married on the first day their home state of Delaware began recognizing gay marriage. State Attorney General Beau Biden was there and called it historic and a love story.

"This is one of the most exciting moments of my life," said Joseph. First thing Monday morning the couple got a marriage license from the Clerks Of The Peace Office in New Castle County. It's also where Dan works.

"I marry people everyday so it's cool that I can get married now," said Dan.

The excitement of the wedding at Gibraltor Mansion in Wilmington was like any couple's big day. They worried about the weather, making sure they had the rings and getting dressed to perfection. But not lost in the excitement of the day is the reality of what this opportunity means for the rest of their lives. The couple said it means stability, benefits and other legal rights.

Joseph said, "When you reach more the difficult parts of life where someone is in the hospital or someone has had an accident and then for lack of a better term you're up the creek without a paddle."

"I cannot tell you how may older couples we know who spent years working with lawyers spending fortunes to put all those protections in place that a simple marriage license would have provided for them," said Dan.
