DETROIT (WJBK) -

The first day on the job for Detroit Police Chief James Craig began one-on-one with the boots on the ground. Not long after roll call, he headed to Detroit's west side where seven suspects believed to be involved in a carjacking ring were taken into custody.

"We had a group of young people committing violent crimes. They're in jail tonight," Craig said.

A 71-year-old man is in critical condition after being carjacked on Sunday.

"That is not acceptable anywhere. I'm not accepting it, and the message is you will go to jail," Craig remarked.

Craig says his top two priorities are reducing violence and raising morale beginning with things he calls unacceptable.

"Motor City, the automobile capitol, and we've got dilapidated police cruisers," Craig said.

The new chief walked the halls of Precinct 10 where he began back in 1977. After spending 28 years with the Los Angeles Police Department and later serving as chief in Portland and Cincinnati, Craig said his plan is to make Detroit one of the safest cities in America.

Craig also went to the scene of a standoff on Monday.
