Thieves Get $200,000 In Rolex Watches At Borgata Heist, Police Say

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -

As the Borgata marked its Tenth Anniversary in Atlantic City, three suspects were making headlines of their own at the glittering gaming hall, pulling off a daring $200,000 smash and grab robbery at a jewelry store just off the casino floor.

"It was definitely a mission statement. They knew what they were doing and they were very precise in what they targeted," said Capt. Charles Love of the Atlantic City Police at a late afternoon news conference.

"That's daring, hopefully they get caught," said Jesse Sikking of Vineland. "That's a lot of money and that's a nice casino."

"It scares people you don't know if you're gonna get killed or shot," said Arlene Shuster of Cherry Hill.

Police say the bandits hit the jewelry store just before nine Monday night. They went immediately for two Rolex watch display cases and made off with a bag full of loot, including at least one Rolex worth around $33,000.

"Just watches. Probably gonna sell them," one casino patron told FOX 29.

"What are they gonna do with them? How do they sell it. Good question. What do they have an outlet to do it?" quipped Bernie Shuster of Cherry Hill..

The thieves did not display any weapons and were gone in a matter of minutes, possibly making their escape through the parking garage. Police are looking for a dark colored vehicle used in the getaway.

"People look at these people and possibly think. Hey they can do it. I can do it too," says Capt. Love.

The Borgata robbery comes amidst a string of smash and grabs in recent months from Radnor on the Main Line just outside of Philly to Evesham Township in South Jersey. Police describe those suspects as operating like a SWAT team.

We haven't ruled out anything in terms of whether it's connected to another group," Capt Love told FOX 29. "That's terrible the economy gets worse and these people find ways to steal."

Police are looking at past robberies in the area to see if they might be linked. They're also looking for witnesses. One clerk was in the store at the time.

No customers and no one was injured during the robbery.
