Max is Dead: Justified Dog Shooting or Revenge?

Posted: Updated:

Max is, or was, Leon Rosby's 80 pound Rottweiler.  Hawthorne police responded to an armed robbery on 137th Street, where a standoff followed.  Rosby was interfering , at least according to  Police, by blasting music from his car and walking too  close to armed officers. After Rosby put, Max, in the car, two officers approached Rosby and cuffed him.  Max jumped from the car and came to his owner's aid.  One officer grabbed unsuccessfully for the leash, the dog paused, then appeared to lung again.. then four quick shots from the officers handgun.  Pop pop pop pop.  It's tough to watch.

Hawthorne police wouldn't talk to us on camera. They issued a very conciliatory statement saying they're investigating everyone and everything and said they are sorry for the loss of the dog.

The video, has gone viral posted on YouTube (Warning: Graphic and Disturbing Content)

I spoke with/ Rosby's lawyer, who has 30 years experience in Southern California, and let's just say she was less than complimentary about the Hawthorne Police Dept.   This is a controversy that won't end soon, as nothing gets people more upset than the death of an animal.  But write it down, this will be a ‘'justified' shooting , because if a cop fears in his mind that his life or someone else's life is in danger, he can by law use deadly force.  Whether that ‘'fear'' is real or  legitimate or not ? That's a separate question.  Remember, it's easy to second guess when you don't have the big dog lunging at you.
