$200 million missing in East Point

SNELLVILLE, Ga. -

An audit has revealed nearly $200 million has gone missing in East Point in the past 12 years.

The audit, which covered 2000 to 2012, was presented to City Council on Monday.

Mayor Earnestine Pittman said that city leaders have suspected major problems since at least last fall. She called the audit "demoralizing."

The audit also found missing or destroyed accounting records between 2008 and 2010. There is also evidence, according to the audit, that city workers are taking gifts from vendors.

Pittman suspects that some department heads and possibly even some city council members could be responsible for some of the missing money. She is asking the Fulton County district attorney to investigate.

The city released a statement, saying, "The City of East Point takes the findings from the audit very seriously as this is a very serious matter.  We are deeply concerned regarding the findings of the City audit and are in the process of investigating reported information.  Upon further review, any persons found guilty of wrongdoing will be prosecuted to the highest letter of the law. Once again our number one priority is to maintain the public's trust in our financial management of the City."

The city has about 40,000 residents and covers around 13.8 square miles.
