Superstorm Sandy

Breezy Point residents sue LIPA, National Grid

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The night Superstorm Sandy struck Breezy Point, couches, drapes and photos turned into kindling.

Eight months later, Kieran Burke strolled with attorney Keith Sullivan along what is now just a soggy sandlot, an area where 150 homes, including Burke's, used to stand.

But Burke does not blame Sandy. He points the finger at LIPA and National Grid, which he and his lawyer say failed to de-energize the neighborhood, despite knowing Sandy was well on the way.

Sullivan said he filed suit in Queens County Supreme Court on behalf of 120 of roughly 155 Breezy Point homeowners whose lives Sullivan says were turned upside down after Sandy.

The lawyer says he estimates damages at about $80 million, but says some of what was lost simply can be recouped.

All Burke, who is renting a place in Yonkers for the time being, says he can do now is try the best he can to turn his life back right-side up.

LIPA issued a statement.

"The actions taken during Sandy were reasonable and appropriate, and we do not believe the claims have merit," LIPA said.

National Grid said it had not received the lawsuit.

"National Grid's action during Sandy were reasonable and appropriate, and we don't believe that the claims have merit," it said.
