SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

For the second year in a row, consumer grade fireworks are legal in Michigan, but there are some changes to the law.

It was open season last year on the Fourth of July. You could shoot off fireworks to your heart's content. However, this year every community has its own rules.

"You can contact the local police department," said Lieutenant Mike Shaw with Michigan State Police. "They're going to be very familiar with the ordinances because they're going to be the ones that are answering the calls for service about people firing them off at three in the morning."

Shaw and the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad came to Fox 2 to provide tips to keep your family safe.

"These aren't the small ones that we're used to in Michigan. These ones actually will kill people," Shaw said.

Designate one person to light the fireworks, then stand a safe distance away.

Most people will buy a super pack, but if they don't all go off, don't run back to check and see how many are left. Consider it a loss. It is better to lose a little cash than a limb or worse.

Sparklers are a fan favorite for kids, but let your child hold it while you light it.

"They burn at 1,800 degrees, so anything they touch is instantly going to catch on fire or burn. So you have to be very careful with the smallest ones to the biggest ones," Shaw said.

Most important is safety. No matter what you choose to buy, make sure you ask the right questions. You want to know what you're buying and how to operate and light it.

Spray down your used fireworks with water to make sure they can no longer explode. Let them dry overnight before you throw them away.

It is also not safe to keep unused fireworks in your house. Michigan State Police will pick them up for free and dispose of them properly.
