Dog mess problem cancels several `Movies in the Park` shows

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A park on the Near West Side has cut down on the number of movies it shows because residents say dog owners aren't picking up after their pets.

People who live or work near Fulton River Park on Kinzie and DesPlaines Streets say there's too much poop in the park. They'd like to spend some time just hanging out and watching movies, but trying to maneuver through the mess has become too much.

The annual "Movies in the Park" show has been canceled and pet owners say the city may be at fault on this one.

Pet owners say it's not the dogs' fault.

"I think that karma is real and if you don't pick up your (beep) you're gonna step in it," one dog owner says. "So it happens. It happened to me when I used to not pick it up and I got tired of it so, so I started picking it up every time."

Some people who live in the area say the park is designed for the perfect place to view movies outdoors, but this year, instead of showing five movies, only three will be shown. A major sponsor pulled out, due to the dog mess.

"That's really not to be had...you need to pick up the stuff cuz it's really bad for the city for the dog for everybody," a park-goer said. "There's always gonna be a residue that's city life--wherever you see grass there's always going to be a creature has gone to the bathroom. Have you seen dogs go poo poo? I don't see it much but occasionally I do see it."

A park official says it happens so often, it's like a landmine trying to get from one end of the park to the other. He says the buildings and high rises are taking over the space for dogs to just roam.

There's no excuse, either. Baggies to pick up after your pets are free and sometimes others see it, but won't' say anything to dogs owners.

There is a $300 fine for not cleaning up after your dog, but it's not enforced. Residents and pet owners say the city is missing out on revenue and on keeping the city cleaner.
