Popeye's Placebo Effect And Spinach's True Power

PHILADELPHIA -

Popeye's love of spinach to make him big and strong was apparently due to a misplaced decimal point.

The popular cartoon character always ate his spinach to get his bulging biceps. That's because spinach was originally thought to contain 35 milligrams of iron per serving – when in fact it was just 3.5 milligrams.

The iron content in the vegetable was miscalculated by a German chemist almost 150 years ago.

The chemist misplaced a decimal point when recording his research, making the iron content 10 times higher than it actually is.
