VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

A man whom authorities say tried to run over an officer Thursday turned up in a hospital with a gunshot wound, police said Friday.

James Kearse is in an Ormond Beach hospital with an elbow wound, Daytona Beach Police said.

Undercover officers in a surveillance operation tracked a car he was driving to Big Bend Lane in Holly Hill. When one of the

officers approached the car, Kearse put up his hands and then hit the gas, nearly backing over an officer, police said.

Two officers fired shots at the car, hitting it several times. The driver ran from the car on foot.

A short time later, Kearse showed up at a hospital just a few miles away.

An investigation is underway to determine whether the officers were justified in using their weapons.
