Macon landfill in noncompliance again

Posted: Updated:

MACON, Ga. (AP) - A Macon landfill is in trouble with regulators again.

The Walker Road Landfill passed a state environmental inspection in November for the first time in years. But the first follow-up inspection in late June found it back in noncompliance.

The Macon Telegraph reports that the Georgia Environmental Protection Division found one public works employee had made changes in the landfill operations without state permission. Violations found in previous reports had not been fixed, including inadequate dirt cover, blowing trash, standing water and erosion.

State Program Manager Scott Henson says he's waiting for the city to submit a plan to correct the problems within a reasonable time. Interim chief administrative officer Dale Walker says he expects the Macon City Council's public works committee to discuss the inspection report Tuesday.
