Checkin' in with Merissa Lynn: Peachtree inspiration

Posted: Updated:
In the last few days since the Peachtree Road Race, I've felt very inspired to get active. Seeing the thousands of people cross the finish line Thursday is just oneof those things I won't forget. I want to do that someday, too!

Growing up I played sports – I went from figure skating to track and field and then to softball. Once I graduated high school and went to college, I played some intramuralsports, but never on a consistent basis.

Now while I wish I could go out and skate or go to softball practice every day again, it's not reality. But, I do miss the regimented schedule I used to have whileI was younger. I was competitive and had a lot more energy.

When I got into the "real world," it felt like I had LESS time to FIND time to be active. Recently, I decided that was all just a big, fat excuse to not get out there.I had to find a way to get some competition back into my life because that's why I love sports and being active.

I turned to something that basically everyone has these days: my smart phone. There are SO many great apps out there that can track your physical activity, eatinghabits, etc. I signed up for the Nike + Running app, which tracks the distance you run both outdoors (using the phone's GPS) or on a treadmill. On the app, you can also add friends and compete with them on a weekly basis. You receive awards for certain feats, too. Alas, I had some competition back in my life! If you know me, you know I don't wanna get beat! I got my account right before the Peachtree Road Race, and since July 4, I've logged over eight miles! I haven't run eight miles in the span of three days inYEARS. Amazing!

So, what I want to know from you guys... How do you stay active? What gives you that push to go out there and get some exercise in? Also… Are there any leagues outthere I should get involved in? I was recently walking around Piedmont Park, and saw a bunch of people playing softball and kickball – I would love to get involved if my work schedule allows it.

Finally – thanks for being some of my inspiration, Peachtree runners. Maybe next year, I'll be running in Atlanta's big race on America's day. :)

Last week, I had the opportunity to finally cover THE circus. Yes, THE SEC Media Days. College football really gets my juices flowing, and I couldn't wait to get to Hoover, Alabama.
