Central Park traffic pattern change

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

With pedestrians and bicyclists outnumbering cars three to one inside Central Park during the summer, the NYC Dept. of Transportation has banned vehicles from the park north of 72nd Street.

The traffic pattern change is in effect for the remainder of the summer and does not affect traffic below 72nd Street.

"That's terrific news. I bike in the park too. It's awesome," a park goer told Good Day NY

"This has an open air country feel. I feel like I'm living in a park. Car free!" said another.

Vehicles had been allowed on the West and East drives during limited hours including on the West Drive from 8 a.m.- 10 a.m. and on the East Drive from 3 p.m.- 7 p.m.

City Council member Gail Brewer has been trying to ban cars in the parks since 2006 to allow for more access for  pedestrians, bikers and all park visitors.

The DOT says it will monitor the closure until limited hours return on Sept.3.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
