Crackdown on unlicensed dogs in Royal Oak

Posted: Updated:
ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WJBK) -

In effort to save some dog bite victims from getting a series of painful rabies shots, the city of Royal Oak is conducting a dog census to ensure more animals are licensed and vaccinated.

Unlicensed dogs are involved in half of all dog bite incidents in Royal Oak.

The census began on July 1, which includes door to door checking of licenses.

Details on costs of getting a license renewed or fines assessed are provided by the city of Royal Oak:

Beginning July 1, 2013, the City of Royal Oak will be conducting a city-wide dog census to ensure all dogs are licensed and have their rabies shots.

Unlicensed dogs are involved in half of all dog bite incidents in Royal Oak.  "When we come across an unlicensed dog running loose, finding the dog's owner is difficult," said Gail Briggs, Animal Control Officer for the cities of Royal Oak and Berkley.  "With licensed animals, we are able to reunite the dog and the owner immediately at any time, day or night, without having to put the dog in the shelter.  The important part of licensing, however, is ensuring Royal Oak animals are properly vaccinated.  In a dog bite investigation, this will save the victim a series of painful rabies shots and keep the shelter from having to quarantine the animal for 10 days."

"Getting your dog licensed helps protect the health and welfare of the community by ensuring all dogs have the proper vaccinations.  Licensing your dog also provides a great benefit to owners because we can help lost dogs find their way home," said City Manager Don Johnson.

Owners have until June 30, 2013 to license their dogs without penalty at the City Clerk's Office.  Owners with dogs found to be unlicensed during the census will be given 14 days to purchase a license, and a $20 penalty will be applied at the time of purchase.  Owners that do not comply with the 14-day notice could be issued a ticket that carries a fine of up to $500.  Dogs over six months old are required to be licensed, and proof of rabies vaccination is needed to obtain a license.

To apply for a license, you can visit the City Clerk's Office, or print out the application at http://www.ci.royal-oak.mi.us/portal/webfm_send/83  and mail it in.

A copy of valid rabies vaccination certificate and a copy / proof of spay/neuter is required at the time of application.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this issue, please do not hesitate to call the City Clerk's Office at (248) 246-3050.
