Has Georgia's Super Speeder Law slowed down drivers?

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

It's been three-and-a-half years since Georgia's Super Speeder law went into effect – but, is it working?

Records show that nearly 230,000 tickets have been issued, but is the law having it's desired of effect of slowing down drivers on the road, or not?

Despite the millions of dollars in Super Speeder fines, Georgia State Troopers say speeding is still one the number-one problems facing metro Atlanta.

Corporal Chris Stalling says he keeps a watchful eye on Interstate-75 inside of the Perimeter, where the speed limit is only 55 miles per hour.

"It's an epidemic. It's constant," Stalling said. "It's hard to go places and find people who are obeying the speed limit."

He says the problem has not improved since Georgia passed the Super Speeder law in 2010.
"Society doesn't slow down. Society is always in a hurry. As a matter of fact, when we stop a lot people, the common response is… ‘Can you go ahead and write my ticket and go ahead and get me on my way? I was late for something,'" Stalling said.

A quick refresher: If you're caught driving 75-mph or more on a two-lane road or 85-mph or more on a highway, then you're considered to be a Super Speeder. In addition to local fees, The Department of Driver's Services will add on a $200 fine.

"Their belief is that it's not going to happen to me. They're not going to be involved in that accident."

According to the DDS, since the Speeder law went into effect, Georgia has racked up nearly 23,00 Super Speeder cases and more than $34 million.

That money is intended to fund trauma care systems in Georgia, where many of the patients are victims of car crashes.
