Young volunteers help Adairsville tornado clean-up

ADAIRSVILLE, Ga. -

A group of teenagers is spending part of their summer to help Adairsville recover from a devastating tornado. The faith-based group SPLASH Bartow is helping the community that was ravaged by a tornado in January.

Ellie Williams, 14, recalls seeing the devastation the morning after the twister struck.

"It was actually very sad to see people go through the tough times that they went through. It just made me feel like I want to get out there and help people," said Williams.

Mobile park manager Sam Parker said the help from the teens was much appreciated.

"There's a lot of small debris left. They came picked it up. We got debris stacked up everywhere. They came through and hand-loaded most of the stuff by hand. And I tell you these young children really, really putting a big effort into it," said Parker.

SPLASH Bartow is a faith-based volunteer group started after another tornado struck the community in 2011.

Volunteer Nathan Hattaway, 16, who drove up from Cartersville, said he's made some new friends while giving back.

"It's like I've known them for years because we're all striving for the same goal. And that's reaching people for Christ and loving people and doing anything we need to help them," said Hattaway.

Adairsville City Councilmember Connie Morrow also did her part to help clean up her city. She says these teens are a prime example of this community coming together in a time of crisis.

"These kids is just one of the many groups that's came through and helped us since January 30," said Morrow.

The SPLASH Bartow teen volunteers will work to clean up debris from the January tornado through Friday.
