Dolton woman charged with animal cruelty

DOLTON, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A Dolton woman on Wednesday was charged with animal cruelty after the Cook County Sheriff's Police Animal Crimes Unit — acting on a tip — found an emaciated dog outside her south suburban home, the Southtown Star is reporting.

The sheriff's department alerted the Chicago Heights-based South Suburban Humane Society at 9:45 a.m. The shelter rescued eight pit bulls that had no food or clean drinking water from the home in the 15400 block of East End Avenue, the sheriff's office said in a news release.

Amanda Wise 29, was charged with one count of animal cruelty and eight counts of owner's duties. She was also charged with obstructing a police officer, for initially giving officers a fake name, and had an outstanding traffic warrant. She is to appear in bond court Thursday in Markham.

There were no signs of dogfighting at the site, but the dogs were chained up outside or were in padlocked wooden pens or crates, officials said.

"It was heartbreaking," South Suburban Humane Society executive director Emily Klehm said. All the dogs were severely dehydrated and had wounds from being subjected to heat and flies, she said.

One emaciated young female dog, less than a year old, was chained to a tree on concrete, causing her ankles to not form properly, she said.

There was no evidence of scarring from dogfighting.

"All eight of them were super friendly," Klehm said of the dogs. "We don't yet know what health issues we are dealing with, but we intend to save all eight.

"The Cook County Sheriff's Department was amazing," Klehm said. "Some might have turned a blind eye, but they stepped up and rescued these dogs."
