John C. McGinley: Getting Red Barber's Sound Was A Real Challenge

John C. McGinley's path to stardom is a story that reads like a classic Hollywood script. While an understudy in New York in the Circle-In-The-Square production of John Patrick Shanley's "Danny and the Deep Blue Sea," he was spotted by director Oliver Stone and soon after was cast in "Platoon," the first of a long list of collaborations between Stone and McGinley which includes "Wall Street," "Talk Radio," "Born on the Fourth of July," "Nixon" and "Any Given Sunday." He received rave reviews for his work in NBC's Emmy-nominated medical comedy series, "Scrub."

Now, John is playing Brooklyn Dodgers announcer Red Barber in the movie, "42" -- about the legendary Jackie Robinson -- which comes out on DVD and Blu-Ray on July 16.  John joins Steve Edwards, Maria Sansone and guest-host Kris Jenner on Good Day L.A.

  • Apart from acting, McGinley is also an author and a spokesperson for the National Down Syndrome Society.
  • He studied acting at Syracuse University, and later at New York University's Graduate Acting Program at the Tisch School of the Arts, graduating in 1984.
  • McGinley had been cast in his first film role in Alan Alda's Sweet Liberty earlier in 1986.
