Allen Park woman donates kidney to her father

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (WJBK) -

A young Allen Park mom is doing something for her dad that will change her life and his forever.

She's giving her father a kidney which is a decision no one takes lightly, including 56-year-old recipient Ben Warren. "I  tried to talk my daughter out of it, you don't want to see your kid hurt, pain. surgery, don't want to see your child go through this."

But there's no changing 33-year-old Krista Nappa's mind. "I'm really excited to have my dad back."

Her father has been coaching kids for as long as he can remember. First his own, now his grandchildren. Krista has fond memories. "As a kid he was always coaching my tee-ball teams and softball, to be able to have my kids know what a great person he is, is important to me."

But Ben was born with a rare kidney disease, which caused kidney failure about 20 years ago. He waited and received a donated cadaver kidney. But now, that kidney is failing.

Ben's health is deteriorating. Without a donated kidney he's headed for dialysis.

Krista stepped right up. "I knew I was always his blood type, but you also have to do tissue typing. Just to go through all the processes then finally hear, 'yep it's a match, it's a go', it's a huge relief."

In a living kidney transplant at the University of Michigan, the kidney is removed from the donor and quickly implanted into the recipient. You need a kidney to filter fluids in your body. Had Krista not donated one of her's, Ben may have been on a waiting list for years.

Her husband Michael fully supports her, "I think it's the most amazing thing anybody could do for somebody."

Heroism runs in this family. Michael is a disabled vet who served in Iraq.

As for Ben, he'll never forget what his daughter is doing for him. "I'll have my daughter with me the rest of my life, its' a great feeling."

If you'd like to follow their story or help with the many financial burdens, use the links below. Right now, about 100,000 people are waiting for kidneys.
