A pregnant woman was killed and two teens are in serious condition after an overnight crash in Osceola County.
Troopers say that a 2011 Kia Sorento driven by 17-year-old Vanessa Santiago Sanchez was heading south on Pine Grove Road at about 1 a.m. Thursday when it ran a stop sign at U.S. 192.
The Sorento struck the left side of a 2011 Oldsmobile Alero driven by Kristen Nicole Wright, 23, of St. Cloud. Wright, who was seven-months pregnant, died at the scene. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Wright was coming from her work at Steak and Shake and was going to visit a friend.
Caroline Aston said her friend was very excited about being a mom-to-be. "She wanted this always, since we were little."
Santiago Sanchez, of St. Cloud and her passenger, 18-year-old Hanna McNeil, of Kissimmee were taken to Osceola Regional Medical Center in serious condition. They were wearing seat belts, the FHP said.
Residents in the area said they have been asking for a light at the Pine Grove intersection for some time.
"They are sympathetic to that, except they can't do anything about it until they can move on it," said Richard Starr, who lives near the intersection. "The light is an expensive proposition."
Troopers said there have only been four crashes in this area this year, and this is the first fatality.
The crash is under investigation, and charges are pending. Troopers said Sanchez could be cited for running a stop sign and for driving after curfew. Minors are not allowed to drive between the hours of 1 a.m. and 5 a.m., unless they are going to and from work.
