Triathlete honors 9/11 victim riding his bike

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Kevin Hannaford of Basking Ridge, New Jersey was killed on 9/11.

A year after the terrorist attacks, Kevin's wife Eileen Hannaford gave Kevin's bike to her brother, Patrick McGinley, a bike perfect for racing.

McGinley decided he'd remember Kevin by riding the bike in several races including the Aquaphor NYC Triathlon 2013.

"I saw the bike hanging there and she asked me if want it. I looked around for different triathlons to do," said McGinley.

Three triathlons later, McGinley looks forward to passing along the bike to Kevin's young sons.

"When they see their uncle doing things with their father's bike, that shows them a positive way to use one's energy," said McGinley.

The 13th annual Aquaphor New York City Triathlon is set for Sunday, July 14.

FOX 5  will air a highlight show on Sunday, July 28 at 2:30 p.m.
