5th grader earns trip to White House with winning recipe

Posted: Updated:

Most kids have hobbies. Dancing, reading, maybe sports. Well one valley 5th grader has a love for cooking, and this summer she was able to turn that passion into a trip to the white house.

"These are the beans from my recipe…"

Alexandra Nickle is cooking up something special.

"You chop up mango and dice it."

It's a dish that caught the eye of professional chefs -- and the first lady.

"Roll it up to get a burrito."

Alexandra's recipe for banana's black bean burritos was one of 54 dishes singled out by the White House.

"I came up with it because I really love burritos and so does almost every kid in Arizona, and I really like mangoes so I made a mango salsa with it," she says.

It earned her an invitation to the Annual Kid's State Dinner.

"It's like a dream come true," says Alexandra.

"You were watching your child's dream come true and that was pretty special."

Lauren Nickle made the trip with her daughter. Both met the president and the first lady.

"I asked her what's it like to live in the White House and she said the floor that they live on, the top floor, was like a very very large apartment and when they came downstairs is where the fun stuff happens," says Alexandra.

Lauren says the family makes eating healthy a priority but it never hurts to have Michelle Obama drive the message home.

"It wasn't just their parents telling them to eat their fruit and vegetables, here it was the first lady saying the same message," says Lauren.
