Parts fall off Allegiant plane departing Orlando Sanford

Posted: Updated:

An Allegiant Air flight departing Orlando Sanford International Airport was forced to return to the terminal Thursday night after parts fell off the plane.

Pilots on Flight 662 reported an "engine failure," according to a spokesperson with the air carrier.

The plane, bound for Lexington, Kentucky, was carrying 163 passengers and six crew members who were transferred to another aircraft so that they could continue their voyage. No one was hurt.

The runway has been cleared, according to airport spokeswoman Diane Crews, who described the incident as a "maintenance issue."

The National Transportation Safety Board was not notified, because no accident, injury, fire or accident occurred, Crews said.

Officials at the airport had to shut down the runway for about 30 minutes while a search for fan blade debris was conducted. The distressed plane was able to continue to the terminal on its own power.
