Country awaited Zimmerman verdict

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

George Zimmerman was found not guilty in the death of teenager Trayvon Martin.

The verdict came down at 10 pm Saturday night. The jury had three options – guilty of second degree murder, guilty of manslaughter or not guilty.

The all-female jury has deliberated for a total of 16 hours. Around 6pm Saturday night, the jury asked a question regarding the charge of manslaughter.

Zimmerman, a former volunteer neighborhood watchman, was accused of killing teenager Trayvon Martin nearly a year and a half ago. The prosecution claimed Zimmerman deliberately targeted the unarmed 17-year-old because he was black.

"(Bleep), punks – these (bleep) always get away -- these were the words in that grown man's mouth," said Assistant District Attorney John Guy.

During the two weeks of testimony the defense was also dramatic at times. Zimmerman's attorney brought in life sized cut outs to act out the night and also illustrate Zimmerman's and Martin's difference in size.

He also brought in a piece of concrete claiming that Martin used it as a weapon by allegedly slamming Zimmerman's head into it.

"That's cement, and that is not an unarmed teenager with nothing but Skittles trying to get home," said Mark O'Mara, defense attorney.

Meanwhile, drama outside the Sanford courtroom also continued to unfold.

Zimmerman supporters as well as supporters of Trayvon Martin have been protesting. Police say they increased their presence in anticipation of a verdict.

The shooting has gripped the entire nation. Martin supporters packed downtown Chicago Saturday and in Manhattan, civil rights advocate Reverend Al Sharpton lead a rally in support of Martin.

He asked for calm no matter what the verdict.

George Zimmerman is now a free man as he was not foundguilty. Meantime, martin supporters continue to protest outside the Sanford,Florida courthouse.
