Buyer of Deal's business in tax dispute

Posted: Updated:

GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) - According to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the company that bought Gov. Nathan Deal's auto salvage business owes $73.8 million in sales and use taxes.

Texas-based vehicle auction company, Copart Inc., bought Gainesville Salvage Disposal from Deal and his business partner, Ken Cronan, for about $4.1 million earlier this year.

The Georgia Department of Revenue audited the company between Jan. 1, 2007 and June 30, 2011. Officials say aside from the back taxes, Copart Inc. owes interest and penalties.

Deal's attorney, Randy Evans, tells the Gainesville Times the sale was arranged through a blind trust and he was unaware of the issue until late last week.

Copart has appealed the audit with the Department of Revenue.
