Boy Scout Jamboree Will Place Weight Limit On Attendees

Posted: Updated:

Some Boy Scouts may not have a chance to go to this year's National Jamboree. But it's not because of other vacation plans or even financial strain, it's because they're too fat.

This year's National Jamboree is one of the most physically demanding in the Boy Scouts' history.

There's rock climbing, biking, rappelling, and even white-water rafting.

But before scouts and their leaders can sign up, they'll have to make sure they're in shape enough to participate.

Anyone with a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 40, will not be allowed to go. Those who fall between 32 and 39.9 have to provide additional health information to Jamboree medical staff to ensure that they are healthy enough.

According to the director of the Jamboree, the site was built to address the need for physical fitness in our youth, which of course is a longstanding component of Scouting.
