Daley campaign: Madigan decision clears governor`s race

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

Former White House chief of staff Bill Daley's campaign spokesman says Attorney General Lisa Madigan's decision not to run for Illinois governor gives voters "a clear choice" in the Democratic primary next spring.

Daley wants to unseat incumbent Gov. Pat Quinn.

Madigan announced Monday that she'll seek a fourth term as attorney general. She says she decided against entering the gubernatorial race because her father, House Speaker Michael Madigan, wants to keep his job.

Daley spokesman Pet Giangreco says a two-way primary pits "a proven leader" against "a governor who can't seem to get anything done." He says Quinn has been unable to solve Illinois' pension woes.

Daley is the son of one ex-Chicago mayor and the brother of another.

Quinn's campaign didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
