TB case confirmed at USF

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

A University of South Florida student has contracted tuberculosis.

The Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County reported Tuesday that the student is undergoing drug therapy and no longer a health risk to others. University and health officials have notified about 90 students, faculty and staff on the Tampa campus who may have been exposed. They will begin testing the group for the disease next week.

Tuberculosis, or TB, is a serious infectious disease that mainly affects the lungs. It is spread from one person to another through coughing, sneezing and talking. Although the disease is contagious, it's not easy to catch. People who have close, day-to-day contact with an infected person are at higher risk of contracting TB.

The last case of tuberculosis at the university was in May 2012.
