Sandy Springs City Council approves Gateway project

Posted: Updated:
SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. -

The Sandy Springs City Council approved plans for a big development. The plans will have a major impact in the area, but some residents fear the impact will be negative.

The Gateway project proposes replacing existing apartments on Roswell Road with 21 acres of new, upscale apartments, an organic grocery store as well as office and retail space.

Separate plans call for realigning Windsor Parkway to improve traffic flow in the area.  As it stands now, during rush hour at Roswell and Windsor Parkway, drivers have to wait three rotations to get through the light. After construction, it'll take one rotation.

Both projects reflect the needs for making city improvements while protecting neighborhoods.

But not everyone is happy about these changes; some of the people who live along the affected roads are pretty upset.

Longtime resident Susan Heard said she'll lose part of her townhouse property to the reconfigured road, and she worries about traffic from a new complex with almost 200 more apartment units.

"They are allowing things with huge densities now and they have come 180 degrees from what they stood for then and campaigned for and why we elected them," said Heard.

The owner of a Popeye's restaurant says he'll also be affected, but says the city has never talked with him.

"We haven't been notified by the city or talked to by anybody at this point, which really surprises us," the owner said.

While some are unhappy, one Council member called it growing pains for an area in need of a facelift and traffic control.
