Downtown Pizza Lucé unveils strict new security plan

Posted: Updated:
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

After gunfire broke out at the downtown Pizza Lucé location last month, the restaurant is taking extra precautions to make sure those who come in for a late-night snack can do so safely.

After midnight on weekends, men will be patted down and electronic wands will be used to check women who enter the restaurant in an effort to help the eatery keep its late-night food license.

When the sun goes down on weekend nights in downtown, the bars and clubs in the Warehouse District can get a little crazy. By midnight and into the late morning hours, the munchies start to kick in.

That's where Pizza Lucé, on Fourth Street, comes in. Their special late-night food and liquor license lets them stay open until 2:30 a.m. Yet, the shooting in June that left a man injured inside could result in the loss of that special license.

No one at the restaurant would speak with FOX 9 News on camera, but a document shows city staffers and the owners have crafted a plan to ease late-night safety concerns during the summer months.

According to the proposal, no one under 21 will be allowed in the restaurant after midnight. Along with the extra searches after midnight, more off-duty cops may be hired. The restaurant may also create a "do not admit" list for sketchy characters.

The plan shows Pizza Lucé is cooperating with the city, and for the most part, is in excellent standing. Yet, some say the extra security could turn people away -- but Pizza Lucé isn't the only Warehouse District establishment with security measures.

At Brothers Bar & Grill, located just a few blocks away, no do-rags, chains or cut-offs are allowed. That said, even the bouncers believe pat-downs and extra searches may not be worth the hassle because it would slow customers down.

On Monday, the Minneapolis City Council will decide whether or not the security measures are enough to allow the restaurant to keep its license.
