Officials say George Zimmerman helped rescue four people from an overturned vehicle last week, just days after he was cleared of all charges in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.

Seminole County Sheriff's spokeswoman Kim Cannaday said in a statement Monday that deputies responding to the July 17 wreck found Zimmerman and another man had already helped the couple and their two children out of their blue Ford Explorer, which had flipped near Interstate 4 and State Road 46 in Sanford.

The Sheriff's Office report said Zimmerman spoke with a deputy at the scene and then left. Zimmerman did not see the crash happen.

"I wasn't surprised at all," says Zimmerman's attorney, Mark O'Mara. "The timing was sort of unique, but the idea that he stopped to help people in trouble is the George Zimmerman who've I've known, or found about, his whole life."

Deputies say Mark Gerstle and his family were trapped inside their SUV when Zimmerman and the other rescuer arrived at the scene.

O'Mara said some people are criticizing Zimmerman for getting out to help. But George's brother  defends his actions.

"Unfortunately, now some of his detractors are criticizing him for this, saying this is more of the same hero complex," Robert Zimmerman Jr. said. "What if he hadn't stopped? What if he hadn't taken the time to help someone who needed the help to get out of the car?"

On July 13, a jury of six women cleared Zimmerman of second-degree murder charges in the 17-year-old Martin's death. Zimmerman's acquittal has prompted rallies nationwide calling for a civil-rights probe, and the case has sparked debate about race and self-defense laws.
