Minneapolis boy falls from 4th floor window

Posted: Updated:

A 5-year-old boy fell from a window on the fourth floor of an apartment building in north Minneapolis Tuesday morning.

A witness told FOX 9 she heard a thump and was stunned to see a child land on the ground outside the Park Plaza apartments at 525 Humboldt Ave. N. near where she was standing.

"There was no screen and there was just a pipe hole -- like a little white thing hanging out the window," Chelsea Fix told FOX 9 News.

Investigators say the screen wasn't fully intact when the boy fell from the bedroom window. Fix and other residents told FOX 9 News there was a portable air conditioner inside, and that's why the screen was at least partially removed.

Minneapolis police said the boy was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center in critical condition at about 8 a.m.

"He was unconscious," Fix said. "I don't know if it was his back or his neck. I just know, by the time police came, they put a neck brace on and a back thing and took him."

The boy was upgraded to serious condition by Tuesday evening.

Witnesses at the Park Plaza said this is not the first time a child has fallen from a window at the building. Residents complain that the managers of the apartment complex don't air condition the building enough -- if at all. Window-units also are not allowed except in patio-facing windows.

About 5,000 kids in the U.S. are injured each year from falls out of windows. On average about 19 kids under the age of 10 die from the fall.
