NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A soldier assigned to Fort Drum in northern New York has died following a non-combat-related incident in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense announced.

Specialist Anthony R. Maddox, 22, of Port Arthur, Texas, died July 22 in Landstuhl, Germany, the Pentagon said. Landstuhl is the site of the U.S. Army medical center that treats wounded and sick service members from Afghanistan and elsewhere.

The military is investigating the incident, which happened in Andar, Afghanistan.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered flags on state government buildings to be flown at half-staff on Friday, July 26, in Maddox's honor.

"On behalf of all New Yorkers, I extend my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Specialist Anthony Maddox," Cuomo said. "Though we are saddened by the death of this young soldier, we are proud of, and grateful for, his service to our country. We all join in mourning his loss."

Maddox, a petroleum supply specialist, was assigned to the 10th Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, based out of Fort Drum. He joined the Army in January 2011, arrived at Fort Drum in July 2011, and deployed with his unit to Afghanistan in January 2013, the Army said.

His awards and decorations include the Army Achievement Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Combat Action Badge, according to the military.

Maddox left behind his father, mother, and stepfather.

Astorino blasts Cuomo over Moreland Commission

In 2013, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo created a state panel to investigate public corruption, called the Moreland Commission. But the governor is accused of interfering with investigations and compromising the commission's work. Republican Astorino, who is running against Cuomo, claimed Cuomo didn't hand over evidence to State Police. Astorino wants a special prosecutor to find out if any state and federal laws were broken.
