PHOENIX -

ROTC Sun Devil battalion officer Jonam Russell was killed in action in Afghanistan Tuesday morning while conducting a dismounted patrol in the Wardak Province.

1st Lieutenant Russell graduated Cum Laude from Arizona State University's W.P. Carey School of Business in May 2011, then joined the U.S. Army as an infantry officer.

He was one of the three NATO troops killed in an attack by a suicide bomber on a donkey.

On February 16, Russell tweeted: "heading to Afghanistan today be rolling back around November."

Pictures on his Facebook page show Russell smiling at a base camp in Afghanistan a few months after he was deployed.

According to reports, Russell and the other soldiers were patrolling on foot around 8:30 a.m. when the attack occurred.

Russell was active in ROTC when attending ASU. He graduated with honors and was commissioned in the army the same day.

A memorial service is scheduled tentatively for 10 a.m., July 26 at Old Main on the Tempe campus. The names and hometowns of the other soldiers killed have not yet been released.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer ordered that flags at state buildings be lowered to half-staff until sunset Thursday to honor Russell and again the day when he is interred.

She said Russell's death was a sobering reminder of the daily perils that military personnel face while carrying out their duties.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.
