Two Young Girls Die In Chester Fire, 4 Year Old Boy Critical

CHESTER, Pa. -

The two-alarm fire raced through the Chester row home with devastating consequences. Two young girls lost their lives in the early morning fire. A young boy also remains in critical condition.

"It's just that we lost the precious ones, two precious ones and one that's surviving. They were very smart little girls. They'll be missed. They'll be missed," the girl's grandmother, Teresa Ferguson told Fox 29.

"I never seen a fire like that in my life. That fire was awful. The smoke," said neighbor Margaret Lee.

"There's black smoke streaming out of the windows and he's screaming my kids my kids," said next door neighbor Don Dobbs.

The 9-year-old and 6-year-old girls died in the fire that started just after 6 a.m. The 4-year-old boy was raced to the hospital, clinging to life. Neighbors say the father of one girl tried courageously to save his family. Three other children and two adults made it out alive.

"He kept trying to run in and he had to come back out cause the smoke was so strong," Dobbs said.

"Amajhay would have been 10 in August," Ferguson said. "Her birthday party was scheduled for Saturday. She was looking forward to that."

"The father, he went in as many times as he could to get his children," Lee added.

Lee, a mother of seven girls, took three of the surviving children to her home up the block to get them away from the fire scene. She said one daughter was in tears.

"She just said she tried to wake her little sister up . She woke up, but she fell back to sleep and she just ran out," Lee explained.

"It's hard. Children shouldn't pass before they get a chance at life," neighbor Michael Earnest said.

Investigators say there were working smoke detectors in the home. The fire started in the rear of the first floor.

"It's just horrendous to think that little babies are no longer here. For something like that it's just such a shame," Dodds said.

"It's tough. They're there one day and not there the next morning so it's hard. It's hard," Ferguson said.

"Nice, nice family, well behaved children, guys, people you would want living along side of you," Dodds said, shaking his heard in disbelief.

The fire remains under investigation. PECO and the fire marshal spent the afternoon at the fire scene.
