Officials Investigating Fire That Killed Two And Injured One

Posted: Updated:
DELAWARE COUNTY, Pa. -

Investigators are searching for the cause after flames sweep through a home in Delaware County, killing two young children and critically injuring a third. Family and neighbors are trying to come to terms with the horrific tragedy.

One of the children who died would've turned 10 soon. Invitations for a birthday party this weekend were already printed up. It's tragedy that has scarred a family and saddened this entire neighborhood.

A father in shock, devastated after family members say his nine-year-old daughter and six-year-old niece died in a house fire.

A four-year-old boy survived but is severely burned.

"It's tough, they are here one day and not here the next morning, it's hard" says Theresa Ferguson.

Theresa Ferguson is the victim's grandmother.

"We are holding up as a family," she says.

Neighbors recall hearing screams and seeing thick black smoke billowing from the two story home on East 15th street in Chester around 630 p.m. Wednesday morning.

Don Dodds lives right next door.

"He's screaming, 'My kids my kids' and he kept trying to run in," he recalls.

Dodds says the father, mother and three children inside got out ok. He says he tried desperately to help the father go back in for the other three children.

"We ran around back to see if we can get in that way and he couldn't get in that way so he kept trying to run in the front door and it was black billowy smoke and we couldn't get in so we just ran back out again," he recalls.

Margaret Lee, another neighbor, and mother of seven, rushed to get the children who made it out and took them to her house.

"Trying to comfort them, I felt like it was one of mine. I was sad but I didn't want to show any emotions to the children they were pretty confused," she says.

Dodd, 75 years old, suffers from a bad heart and has a pacemaker. He says none of that mattered when it came to helping save the children.

"People needed help. I try to help them. It's what anybody would do," he says.

We're still waiting to learn the cause of the fire. Investigator believe it started on the first floor in the back of the house.
